Graphical User Interface Design Competition

I am planning a Graphical User Interface Design competition and looking for sponsors that could help facilitate this event.

If you have a business or website you would like to promote, then this is for you. If you are excited about participating in the competition, you could link this page to possible sponsors or blog about this to spread the message so I can begin the contest, any help will be greatly appreciated.

This article provides an overview of the project and sponsorship details and how will it help you. To skip to the sponsorship details just scroll down.

Overview of the contest

“The Graphical User Interface (GUI) design competition aims to raise the standards of interface design in the industry. Talented designers from around the globe can participate to show off their best interface concepts.”

What is a GUI?

A graphical user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface which allows people to interact with electronic devices like computers.

A GUI offers graphical icons, and visual indicators as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation to fully represent the information and actions available to a user.

The actions are usually performed through direct manipulation of the graphical elements.

Evolution of the GUI

The Alto was the first system to pull together all of the elements of the modern Graphical User Interface. The Alto was designed and built by Xerox for research. Although Xerox donated a number of them to various organizations, they were never sold.

The Xerox Alto was designed to be a relatively small, yet powerful, personal office computer with the ability to present information graphically, and to easily share information. They were also designed to utilize laser printers that were also under development at Xerox.

The first version of the Mac OS (simply called System) is distinguishable among other operating systems from the same period because it does not use a command line interface; it was one of the first operating systems to use an entirely graphical user interface. In addition to the system kernel is the Finder, an application used for file management, which also displays the Desktop.

When Apple unleashed the Macintosh in 1984 the desktop as we know it became mainstream. Two decades later we still have essentially the same desktop concepts: file and applications icons on the desktop, a separate bar for menus and launchers. Incremental improvements have been made to these metaphors, such as the addition of the taskbar in the 1990s. But very little has actually changed.

Designing for the future

Most GUIs are still based on the standards that were set in 1984. We need to explore new possibilities to make the GUI simpler and increasingly productive.

Designers at large software companies are running out of ideas and the community has not been given a chance to express it self without limitations.

Who can participate ?

Everyone is welcome! If you think you have an idea of a Graphical User Interface that will blow our mind, hop in. Let the creativity flow.

Sponsorship Details

I am looking for financial support during the Graphical User Interface Design competition.

How will you benefit from this sponsorship:

  • You will receive banner space of 125×125 px. It will be placed on every page prominently under “This event is sponsored by” which will be linked to your website.
  • Deliver your message to thousands of designers, professionals and amateurs alike from around the world.
  • If you have a product that you would like to promote, you may do so by awarding that product to the top ten designs. You will receive a mention on the prizes page which is the first thing a contestant would be interested in.
  • Any special requests I should know about, let me know by contacting me.

This sounds like a cool contest. Do you have a date for it yet, or is that contingent upon getting sponsors?
